Friday Foto

This is a new posting idea that I will do every Friday using only one of my favorite pictures. I don't edit my pictures- these are straight from the camera aside from a little cropping. Let me know what you think...

It's so Cold!

This is the view from my dining room looking out over my arena and my neighbor's land. This small mountain is called South Mountain even though it is to the north. Isn't it pretty with the foggy clouds and snow on it? I decided to turn the horses out for a little while today. Even though it was really cold, the sun was shining for a few hours and a lot of the snow melted.
I zoomed in for a closeup of Yalla resting.
Can you count the horses?
It was only 15 degrees this morning!
The clouds rolled in shortly after these photos and it began snowing again. Twice in the last two days it even snowed in Albuquerque, and it's not yet Halloween! We're having very crazy weather!!
Oh yeah, I called the Arabian Horse Association today to ask some questions about Yalla's registration. Their home office is in Colorado and the recorded message said that the offices were closed due to inclement weather. It's happening everywhere!

there's blood on my nose

This has been a terrible month for me. I have been dealing with very sick dogs.
Three weeks ago I had to put my darling Gunnar down during exploratory surgery. In early summer he was diagnosed with cancer in the sinus area and was given a very short time to live. Sure enough, he worsened to the point where he had trouble breathing and was continuously oozing "stuff" from a hole in his forehead. Many times he would bump his nose and have terrible nosebleeds.

Two weeks ago, Daisy had a bleeding skin growth on her belly surgically removed. The vet said it was noncancerous. hooray! She has other skin 'tags' that the vet said not to worry about. Here she is on her way to the vet's office. Not very happy, is she?
After the surgery, to keep her from chewing on the stitches, the vet suggested using an Elizabethan collar or a tee shirt. I know how much she hates wearing the huge plastic 'milk jug' collar, she bangs into everything and cries all the time she's wearing one so I opted for the tee shirt. Doesn't she look stylish?

She wore this shirt for ten days and then I took her back to the vet to get her stitches removed. She seemed to like wearing the shirt and the stitches healed nicely. Everything looked great.

Then, this Sunday she developed a continuously bleeding nose. It was just a little trickle but she'd sneeze blood spatters over everything. Yuck!! Come Monday morning, back she went to the vet's office. The vet said that she either has a severe allergic reaction or she has been exposed to something lethal like rat poison! I can't think of anything that she has come into contact with so I'm hoping it's allergies. She has been losing her hair in places too but I thought it might be from wearing the shirt. The vet gave her several shots and I have to give her pills for the next week or so. Hopefully, this will clear it all up.

I am at a loss! Why is this happening to us now? My dogs have always been very healthy, besides the occasional infection. Just as a random thought, is it possible that Daisy is getting sick like Gunnar was? I have always given my big dogs water in the plastic buckets that cat litter comes in. Is there any possibility that this could have leached poisons into their water?? Please send prayers for Daisy. I am so worried about her.

Spitting the dawn, come come come along before the animals awake

The sunrise was gorgeous this morning so I took my camera along to feed the horses.
It looked like a fire in the sky!

Over at the barn, everybody was waking up.

Here's Nadia
Here's Scout.

Here's Yalla!
And here's Annie's nose.

Here are mare and filly sharing some morning cereal, well, grain. Notice how Yalla has grain on her face!

I noticed that the hairline on Yalla's hind legs are really crooked. Crazy, huh?

The water barrel even had ice floating in it. Boy, is it cold!

Here's one last parting shot of dawn.

Something in the Air, part III

Here are some views from up in the air. It was interesting to see the balloons lifting off the ground from above.

Same balloon, it's now in the air and the one next to it is getting inflated.

I like this shot of some of the spectators. Launching balloons in all stages.
I especially like the tiger balloon! Don't they look crowded?
This is coming into the balloon field. The narrow balloons are special racing balloons. The two triangles on the ground are part of a competition. The balloonist must drop a colored baggie of sand into each triangle as close to the other one as possible but not over the lines. This tall pole is part of the key grab race. There is an envelope on top with the key to a brand new car. This is what we were trying for. We were coming in towards the pole right behind another balloon. They grabbed at it and dropped it and then the referees had to put it back on the pole so we didn't even get a shot at it. WE WERE SO CLOSE! It's almost impossible to turn around in a balloon so the next balloon that came by it got it. This is looking back at it after we'd passed it. How many balloons can you see here? Can you count them all??
Even when I was taking a picture of the Railrunner Train I got a photo of a balloon! Look in the bottom right hand corner.

The Balloonists Prayer
May the winds welcome you with softness.
May the sun bless you with its warm hands.
May you fly so high and so well that God
joins you in laughter and sets you gently
back into the loving arms of Mother Earth.
