Soul Surfer

This weekend, I watched the movie, Soul Surfer, about Bethany Hamilton, the teen aged surfer who had her arm bitten off by a shark. She lost 60% of her blood and survived only because her friend's father immediately put a tourniquet on her arm. He was there with her when it happened and they called 911 and met the ambulance en route.

A mere three weeks after the accident, she went surfing again. She had a really tough time relearning but she adapted and refused to be enabled, such as being allotted extra time to paddle out to the waves during competition. I really liked one of her lines, "I don't need easy. I just need possible". She had the courage and will power to get back on the board in spite of everything. It reminded me of horsebackriding and how an accident can be such a setback. What I find most incredible though is that I don't think fear of sharks ever occured to her. I mean, I'm not sure I'd ever want to go back into the water again. What do you think?

Here's the trailer to the movie. The computer graphics are pretty amazing considering the actress wasn't one-armed. I certainly recommend going to see it, but bring kleenex.

And here's a video of the real Bethany
