Man in the Middle

The other day I had an appointment with the farrier. I decided to let him do Yalla first. She wasn't so sure about him and gave me a little trouble getting haltered. But then she stood pretty well for him. She tried to pull her hoof away a few times but otherwise she accepted him and his working on her feet. After I let Yalla go, and the farrier went to work on her mama, she showed her curiosity and sniffed him and his tools.

I notice that Yalla's knees are already the size of all my other horses. I asked him if this was normal. I also asked what he thought of her feet and legs and he said she had some good solid bone. He thinks she will be taller than her mama, Annie. Notice that Annie is only wearing a rope on her nose and poll. I created a makeshift halter from the lead rope I used with Yalla. She stands so well for her foot trims if I stand with her. It's a far cry from this day.
Sorry for the poor quality of the photos. I was using my cell phone.

Yalla is so cute - growing cuter by the day! Glad Annie was so good for the farrier - I've had a long road with my mare who used to be the worst and is doing much better with the farrier now.

Thanks, actually, her issue is with tying. The incident with the farrier was because he tied her up. She fights being tied and pulls back. She is great for just standing still however. This horseshoer is great- super fast and good with the horses. He can get all four trimmed in just over an hour. The horses don't get bored standing there with him.

When Gabbrielle was a yearling, I always had the farrier work with her first while he had the energy. He was good about releasing her feet often so that she didn't feel trapped. It almost felt like I had to apologize for buying a young, inexperienced horse and just expecting him to help in training her to accept having her feet trimmed, but he was very supportive.

So glad to hear that Yalla! did well for the farrier! I have my farrier out next week, and I have been working on her fronts quite a bit, but have only picked up her hinds once. I am hoping he can get her hooves trimmed! The vet is out tomorrow for vaccinations. Hopefully that will go well.

Good girl, Yalla! I think she is maturing to a nice young lady. :)

My farrier is quite willing to work with Yalla. In fact, he encourages it- no charge for her trims! He considers it a future investment.

What a good girl, Yalla!!! She is a pro. My farrier wasn't too sure about doing my 6 month old fillies, but they stood like champs. It's amazing what some work from the owners can do. He was impressed that they stood better than some of the older horses he does. Yalla must have a great teacher! And it helps that she has a good momma too!! She is such a cutie!
