snowflake on my face

It's a blizzard today and all the horses are warm in their blankets of snow

except Annie. She never has enough fur or fat to keep warm. She was damp and iced up so I rubbed her down with a flannel. Since she was still slightly wet, I decided to throw on the flannel sheet and a blanket. That way she can dry off and warm up. Notice the snow already accumulating on the blanket?

I love the way Yalla looks with snow all over her

Don't ask me why I turned the camera at the end! thumps head!

She looks so cute covered in snow. Don't feel bad about turning the camera on it's side. I've done it too.

We've had rain all day, but it's changing to snow tonight.

Keep the snow on your side of the mountain.

Thanks for visiting my blog! Yalla is adorable and she's actually the reason I started following your blog. :) I'm looking forward to seeing them grow and change colors as well. Yes Chrome's dam was a flea bitten gray Arabian cross. :) I'm curious to see if Chrome and Yalla will turn flea bitten, or dappled, etc. It's impossible to guess what stages they will go through as they gray out. Chrome's sire is a Friesian, so he's half. He was born 5-19-09. When was Yalla born?

Have you noticed any gray on Yalla yet? I can see white hairs around Chrome's star and right before he grew his winter coat in his chest was a steel gray color where the rest of his body was still a bleached bay. I'm so curious and impatient to see what he'll look like when he sheds in the spring. :)

Brrr! Yalla is adorable, but those snow coats look cold to this thin skinned Texan...

You know I was just looking back at Yalla's baby pictures and noticed she was born with pale legs. Chrome on the other hand was born with black legs, see here: http://rdxhorses.blogspot.com/2009/10/chromes-baby-pictures-ii.html

I read a website somewhere that said horses born with dark legs will turn gray and horses born with pale legs that turn dark are true bays and will not turn gray! So if that's correct then Chrome with turn gray (darn!) and Yalla will stay bay . . . it will be interesting to see if this holds true.

Anyway I'll stop rambling now. Color genetics have always interested me and gray has always baffled me. It's never been one of my favorite colors, but now that I actually have a colt who will possibly be gray it's exciting!

LOl, I just sent you an email about the color of the two foals. Chrome looks like he was born dark and Yalla was born dun with wheat colored legs. The Arabian website states that a foal born dark usually lightens whereas a foal born with light legs that turn dark will stay dark. Accordingly, Chrome should go grey and Yalla should stay dark bay or black. I am curious how true this is. We will have to watch closely.

Another foal to watch this spring is Paint Girl's Mustang, Chance. She is also a similar color right now and I believe her mother was a dun. I'm expecting her to stay black or sable brown too.

Yalla! is a month younger than Chrome. She was born June 14, 2009 I imagine she is quite a bit smaller too although the shoer says she's large boned and should grow nicely. Annie is 14.3 and the stallion is 15.1 so I'm hoping for 15hh.

I bet you guys are getting hammered over there considering how much we've gotten. Horses look pretty and majestic with that snow.

Yalla! looks like she's not minding the weather one bit!

Cool so you've heard the same thing I have about the color they're born with. Can you send me the link to Paint Girl's blog so I can see Chance? Also what email address did you send to? I can't find the email (I have several lol). Chrome is 13hh right now and I'm hoping he'll reach at least 15.2hh. My email is storm_glory@yahoo.com if you want to try again. :)
