Do the horses feel the cold? Even in mild Auckland, New Zealand, I see people put blankets on their horses.

It's amazing how horses can grow thick winter coats practically overnight. The individual hairs will raise up and create a layer of insulation depending on need. A good rule of thumb is that if the snow accumulates on their backs then there's enough insulation and body heat is retained, not melting the snow. However, if the snow melts, then you know the body heat is escaping into the air and they are burning extra calories. That is why I blanket Annie on cold, wet nights and not the other horses. Her body does not maintain the level of insulation the others have.
