RIP Little Buddha

My little Japanese Chin, Little Buddha (of Suburbia) is gone!

I let him and Sandy out to go pee and play this morning. Then I left the front door cracked open so he could push it open when he returned, like he always does, but I know he never will again. Recently, he had a back injury and was hurting for months. He got a couple of steroid shots and then he began to feel like a puppy again. He and Sandy loved to go for runs in the nearby fields, visiting the neighbors. I knew the risks, but keeping him close was nearly impossible. He would wait and wait until he got out of sight and then make a dash, running off for twenty minutes at a time. I guess his luck ran out this morning.

As I was waiting for him to come back, I heard some yipes in the distance behind my house. I also heard Sandy growling and barking along with another dog. I ran to the back door and saw a brown shape, carrying something in it's mouth run across the fields in back of the barn, followed closely by two more brown shapes. They were gone in a flash and then as I headed out that way, Sandy came running up to me. I wish she could talk. I fed the horses in silence, thinking about it. I know what happened. Coyotes. I always thought Sandy would protect him because she is the only dog I know that will go running after coyotes but I guess the numbers were stacked in their favor. I guess it's all about the Circle of Life, isn't it? He couldn't have been worth eating. He weighed all of four and a half pounds and most of that was his thick fur.

Buddha will be missed so much! He would come back from doing his duty outside and just run around the house madly for a few minutes because he felt so good. Whenever it was feeding time, he would do "Chin spins". He loved to lay on the top of the couch or on the table so he could look out of the window. He was always called a puppy by strangers and a "she" because he was so tiny and pretty. He had a beautiful white coat that was never dirty looking and the silkiest, softest long hair ever.

He was the best lap dog! He was my constant companion for the last seven years.

Just yesterday, I was thinking about my life and how I couldn't cry any more and it's true, I can't. I just visited CTG Ponies blog and The Hurt, sung by Johnny Cash, was playing. It should have made me break down and cry just for the song but now, with Buddha gone, I still can't.

R.I.P. Buddha, my little buddy!!!

I'm so sorry. I'm sure Sandy was distracted by one coyote while another got Buddha. I've seen coyotes do that before several times. They're smart and will work together.

I know he'll be missed.

Oh, that just makes me sick about Buddha. The coyotes here have been horrible..coming up during the daytime for some kind of food and water. My chickens have been picked off. Every day they would come up earlier and earlier. I'm so sorry for your loss.
Take care,
Berte

Oh your poor Buddha. I feel so bad for him and for you and the family. I'm sure Sandy did what could be done to try and help him. I'm so sorry.

That's terrible! Poor Buddha.

I know what you mean about being out of tears. I'm in a similar place...

Hang in there.

Oh I am so sorry Val :C Thats so sad poor little old man! I would watch it with Coyotes though. They are known for luring dogs away and then ambushing them. I know people around here kill coyotes and hang them on the fences so they do not become a nuisance.

Thanks for your kind thoughts everyone. I feel so guilty! Maybe I should have kept him on a leash all the time but he really enjoyed running around and exploring.

How terrible. I am so sorry. It is so hard to lose our fuzzy friends, and your story is chilling. I know you have many happy Buddha memories, you shared some already. Those bring back happy times.

Oh no! How awful! I actually liked coyotes but this makes me seriously reconsider that. :( I guess it's humans' fault though, not theirs. They're just trying to find food. Sorry for rambling. Long day. I'm so sorry for your loss! I always feel so guilty for keeping my dogs on a leash, but this makes me glad I have been (although probably more for vehicles than coyotes here). Don't feel guilty. He was happy and had seven absolutely wonderful years with you. I'm sure as small as he was that it happened quickly and he didn't suffer. I'll be thinking about you. Give Sandy a hug for me.

So sorry for your loss. We, too, live with that fear for our little Martha.

Did you get your goodies yet?

Oh no. I'm so sorry. I apologize for missing this post. I've been away from home for a while, my blog reader is not updating posts for some reason, and I am so far behind in catching up with all the blogs.

Poor sweet little Buddha. He was your canine soul mate.

Horrible coyotes!
We've been keeping our hens in their coop for the past 2 weeks because there has been a pack of coyotes hanging around our neighborhood. One day we had one coyote eye-ing our chickens as we drove up our driveway. It just stood their under our peach tree and didn't make an effort to run away even after we honked at it. Creepy.
This seems to be the year of the predators.
Once again, I'm very sorry for your loss.
