Neighborhood threat

Yesterday was the BIG day. We put Annie and Yalla! in with Scout and Nadia for the first time. It was very interesting watching the herd dynamics. The first thing Annie did was show Scout that she was in charge and to stay clear of her precious filly. FYI, only Scout's feelings were hurt.
Scout and Nadia beat a hasty retreat to the "safe zone" in the middle of the arena and stood motionless while Annie took Yalla! all around the arena several times.Annie only had to glare at Scout and Nadia for them to know that she meant business when she said stay away from her baby. Look at Annie's ears!
Scout would always edge closer and closer though.
Annie worked hard keeping Yalla! in place.I like this photo of all my horses in a row, well, sort of. Scout and Nadia obeyed Annie very well and pretended that they were not interested. Scout was very curious and I could see how he wanted to go meet Yalla! nose to nose. He was always watching her.

He even followed them across the field. He tried to be very nonchalant about the whole affair by laying down and rolling around.

Nadia was also very interested. As time went on, Annie let Yalla! drift further away as long as Scout and Nadia showed 'no interest'.It looks like Yalla! is saying,"but I don't want to leave them!"Scout did get to meet Yalla! though, right near us. We got ready for a quick escape in case Annie let loose on Scout but she tolerated his attention.

Oh yeah! Yalla! got to wear a halter! She finally grew into it, well, almost! lol.

Awww, Yalla! does look so pretty in her halter. She still has some growing to do to fill it in, though. haha!

Annie was quite the neighborhood threat wasn't she? Good song title, for sure! That was so exciting and interesting to see how they all reacted to each other. I could have sat there all day and watched. And I know it was hard for you to pull yourself away, too.

You took some amazing photos. That first one....wow! That just tells it all. :)

Those pictures tell an accurate story. I stopped riding at my neighbor's place, because each time I'd lead a horse onto her property, one of the foals would start chasing us. Then the dam would get angry and attack my horse, when my horse was just minding its own business and passing through. I got tired of having to chase off angry mothers to protect my horses. Is all that green grass from rain, or have you been watering it?

What a good Momma, Annie is!! Protecting her baby. I always get so worried the first day out with other horses. But the Mommas always know what to do. My gelding thinks he is a Midwife and he tries to take over mothering the foals. It's quite funny. Yalla looks FABULOUS in her halter!! She will grow into it fast. Then you will need to get a bigger one!! She is just too cute!!

Awww, look at that pretty baby face! I love watching the herd dynamics when the new moms get turned out. Looks like Scout will be the babysitter in no time.

That's good to see Annie being so protective. It will teach Yallah about herd dynamics which will be a good lesson as she grows. At some point Annie will start disciplining Yallah as she prepares to wean her away. That's a sign of a good mother and it will help you in your relationship with Yallah.

I was thinking the same thing as Sydney, let them be babysitters! :) It is interesting how protective mamas are, though! It's their instinct! Happy 4th of July!
