Seven

The other day someone asked if I still had Sandy. Yes, indeed! We just didn't bring her with us in the truck because there was no room. We did, however, end up bringing her home. Although she's the family's dog, her heart belongs to my daughter, Sheila. Sheila is the first person she made contact with. Incredibly, we now know the story of how she came to live with us too.
The other day, my daughter had some friends over. My daughter and Sandy ran out to meet them and, instead of being a guard dog, Sandy jumped right into the car with them as they opened the door to get out. My daughter was shocked. The friends exclaimed, "that's Seven!"
It seems that one of her friends was Sandy-Seven's previous owner. He had been out of town for the last year and the dog had been missing since last April from his parent's house.
So, did they want her back? Sandy jumped back out of the car and ran right back to my daughter. It's so obvious the connection between her and my daughter that there was no way they'd get her back even if they did want her. They were very glad to see she found herself a good home.

Another day, Sheila took Sandy-Seven over to her old house for everybody to see her. The mother loved all over her and the other dogs romped around with her and they even have a cat which explains how she is so well behaved with all my animals. However, although she was back home, it was just a visit. She chose to  stay by Sheila's side while they visited.

The story- she was named Seven because she was the seventh puppy in the litter. They showed Sheila some puppy pictures. A year or so ago, she had become pregnant. Somehow she ate rat poison and lost the puppies (all stillborn). She was so sick/upset that she ran away. They thought she died. They were so thankful to see her fully recovered and happy. Her old home is across the highway and a total of about ten miles from our house. It seems that Sheila has been to the house years ago when Seven still lived there although Sheila doesn't remember. I'll bet Sandy remembered her. Isn't that romantic? I like to think that she was so distraught and sick that she ran away to recover (or die) and ended up at our place because she recognized Sheila's scent. What do you think? Now this could be a children's book, huh?

7 is a noble dog. i can see it in her photos. and 7 is such a cool Trekkie name (7 of 9).

it's not a very warm name though, i like yours. she's not borg, afterall. if her previous owners are not aware, let them know about the borg name 7.

what a great story! she looks a lot like shalom, the dog my inlaws adopted recently, a resuce from turkey. she never barks, she is skittish but will come up to you and put her nose on your lap asking to be acknowledged. i like shalom just because she's so un-intrusive, QUIET, but there. she has a great job: bringing a 3 generation family joy in their 15th century home. she does good work.

the grandparents adore her daily visits. the cats could do without her though...

What an amazing story! It's such a small world. Most times we never get to know the stories behind the critters who end up on our doorsteps.

That is such an awesome story!!! I'm so happy Sandy found you guys and that you finally learned her story. I'm glad they didn't insist on getting her back. That would have been so sad.

It's amazing how dogs pick us. Well, not me, well, once me, but not this... Ah shoot. I'm missingnthe point!

What a wonderful story. She's a terrific dog and much more of a Sandy, IMHO

I too think that the name Sandy fits her better :)

Obviously she wasn't too happy in her former home or she would have found her way back...

Amazing!

Interesting that she ended up with similar sounding names (at least to a dog's ears).

I have to giggle at the reason for her original name being Seven. Having named two of our cats, Uno (1) and Deuce (2) according to their birth order...I totally get it. I also knew someone who named the foals out of a particular mare numerically...Uno, Dos, Tres...etc. When I knew them they were riding Five.

Anyway...That's awesome that you know Sandy's background now. Obviously she has decided her home is with you now. Glad the previous family let her stay.

Val, I'm so amazed at this story! Incredible! wow.

So they didn't ask for her back, did they? Weird for them to see their dog and be mature enough to let well enough alone. I don't think I could be so mature about Hank.

So glad I stopped by. I've missed your blog and all your cool animal stories.

Thaks for the great commetns everyone.

I had a cat many years ago, when we lived on a very busy street, who would always sit on the wall and watch the traffic go by. Then we moved to another house on a very quiet street and within three weeks, she ran away. I posted a reward and got her back. Then she ran away again. I looked for her but not as actively because I realized she just wasn't happy at our house any more. Then I began to see a cat with the exact same coloring as her, sitting on a wall, watching the busy traffic. This was pretty far away from our house but I knew it was my cat. Tasha was a blue cream Persian, long haired, gray over tan, with pumpkin orange eyes. I never stopped by to claim her. It made me feel good just knowing that she was alive and happy again. For many years, I'd see her as I drove past their house, sitting on the wall or in the window and I'd wave and wish her well.
