Outside the pale

This morning I was surprised by the "snow-rain". It was loud like raindrops falling. They're really hard to see in the pictures but they are perfect little balls. Kind of like mini styrofoam balls. Tiny, tiny balls.
I wonder what the Eskimo term for this kind of snow is...

We get that. We call it hail. Sometimes it is small, sometimes bigger, like peas. Rarely, it the size of marbles. It really is frozen raindrops. As I recal, it is when rain passes through a layer of air that is cold enough to feeze it. It may be cold enough at ground level to stay frozen for a while. Sometimes it melts in a few minutes.

yes, I suppose it is hail, but it is so cute!! I always think of hail as bigger and odd shaped- not so round. lol!

Clever title for your post, Val :)

I slept right through the rain ice falling. Durn.
I did see it on the ground this morning, as I scratched my head. Cool stuff.

How about we head south about 11am on Saturday?
Are you getting letterboxing withdrawal symptoms like me? lol!

Hi there Val!! Boy, I absolutely love your picture on your header - very Christmasy indeed!! You've just given me an idea for some beautiful pictures but we hardly ever get snow around here - but those fir trees abound. So anyway, I took a look around and checked out your horsey pics. Is that Nadia who is chocolate-dipped a few posts back??? He and Ladde might enjoy a good roll and some frolic! And those leaves!! - what kind of tree is that? The leaves look huge! Amazing how different everything looks in different parts of the country. What fun - in a way I feel like I'm visiting New Mexico!! Thanks so much for your comments on my blog. I love having visitors.

Hey...it looks like the frozen rain pellets that the people here in Washington call snow...lol!!!

It also kind of looks like the icing on an oatmeal cookie...mmmmmm!!!!

Melanie- I was thinking the same thing, hmmm, wishful thinking!
I always make LOTS of cookies and candies for Christmas but I just can't get inspired this year. I really dread Christmas coming- and that's from someone who LOVES Christmas!
