The Way it Feels

Here are some photos of snow on my horse's back. The snow was beautiful, big, white flakes. It's too bad they're such lousy photos. Did you know Appaloosa horses have raised spots? You can almost see it here on Scout,. The colored spot hair actually stands up more than the white blanket hair. You can really feel their spots!
edited 12-9-08 with new snow photos!

Here's Annie. You can almost see how her coat hairs stand on end and lift completely from her body to keep her warmer.

Notice the funny white bump just off center on the top left in this next photo. That is one of Scout's Appaloosa spots. See how raised up the hair is? Actually, it's fun to compare with the above picture. Try it. Cool, huh?

Here's Nadia. She's plastered with snow! Snow should not melt right away on a horse's back. If it does, it means they are not insulated against the cold. I guess she's warm enough, huh?

I didn't know that. It's been a few years since I've petted an Appy. When I rode horses at day camp as a child they often put me on an Appy named Remington. That was one solid gelding -- temperatment-wise. His coat was spotty and snowy: Black with white marks.

The spots really show up best with the long winter coat. That's about the only reason I like to see the fuzzy hair on Scout. lol.

Look at that snow!!!
Pintos/paints will sometimes have longer hair on their "patches" too, so Scout probably has a double whammy of the long haired spot/patch gene...lol!!!
