Sunday (9/27/09 Signs of Fall)

Looking at the wall thermostat in my house, there are definite signs of fall. The top number is the current temperature outside. The bottom left is the low and the bottom right is the high in recent days. We've had a couple of freezes already and, as you can see, the afternoons are still quite warm. Yalla! has already grown a very plush winter coat.
Fall means getting the hay in the barn
and having a BIG woodpile outside. We still need to go wood cutting this year. This is just the beginning of our woodpile. We have to split the wood and season it before it is ready to burn.
Speaking of trees, the leaves are already turning colors!
Because of the freezing temperatures, my garden is finished. I pulled out all the produce I could.
We had a major corn roasting the other night. Then I fed some immature corn and dried out cornstalks to the horses. They loved the treat!

And, of course, my favorite sign of ending summer and impending fall is the pretty little purple aster.

That's a thick coat on Yalla! My babies are still really slick, with just a hint of winter fur coming in.

That is some thick fur, and you had a very fruitful garden.

MSW- Yalla! is my 3 month old Arabian horse, see sidebar photo.

Yes, Yalla! Is very soft. I don't think she ever really went slick, baby fur to winter coat!

Winter is comming! Janow has quite a coat too. Unfortunately, they daytime temps are up in the high 80s, 90s over the weekend. He just stands around sweating.

Our horses are getting their fall coats, too. Not thick yet, but can tell their color is deeper & richer. Blue is turning black again!

It was down in the mid thirties overnight. Not liking that so much!!

Beautiful signs of fall....I think today was our first real fall day....lots of rain, and cooler temps. Yalla's fuzzy brown color reminds me a bit of my sister's new filly! Seems like the horses only keep their sleek coats for a few months of the year, doesn't it?

Yep, fall is here. The Cottonwoods on our side of the mountains are beginning to turn yellow and gold and we too are enjoying the purple asters.

Morgunn, our Icelandic, is getting a heavy coat, heavier than usual for this early so I'm betting on a cold winter.
