Sunday Stills (History- over 60 years old 6/27/10)

This week's Sunday Stills challenge is "History- over 60 years old". Gosh, I couldn't make up my mind. There are so many things around me that are historic! I decided to revisit the Pony Express station I stopped at last year during one of my road trips.

Oh, and here's one of my favorite old barn photos. For such an old, decrepit barn in a barren field, doesn't it just look really happy? ;)

I was surprised to hear on NPR last week that the Pony Express was only in operation for 2 years, and that they never made any money. That's a short time for something that is such an icon of the Old West. Think of all the movies and such centered around it.

The pony express is one of my favorite subjects in history, thanks for sharing those pictures of it!

Very nice! Love the saddles. To me this is one of the most interesting challenges ever.

The saddle is beautiful.
And, really, look at the size of the mail pockets!!

Wow! great saddle. Love the pics.

I saw your comment about people referring to Yalla as a pony, if I have ever offended you that way I apologize. For me referring to my horses as ponies is an affectionate thing. It really has nothing to do with their size or what type of horse.

Where was this at? We have an old pony express station down by Fairbury, NE called Rock Creek Station.

That sure would be something cool to see!

I stopped by this little town last summer with my son. I rode with him to Utah. We both like the museum and the little town. I have those same photos, LOL. Did they open the time capsule yet? I think it was supposed to be opened in 2010.

Leah, yes it was a very short run operation however there still are pony express rides around the country, mostly for fun. When I drove through Holbrook I was pleasantly surprised to find that every January they ride from Holbrook to Scottsdale in a relay, reenacting the original pony express ride. You can even get your mail stamped and delivered during the ride.

RR- No offense taken, I don't remember you saying anything like it but I would know it was intentional. I'm talking about non horse people referring to foals and young horses as ponies because they are smaller than the others. Actually, my SIL always calls Yalla! the "puppy horse". lol.

MorePhotosPlease- That is so cool! I went through last year so I don't know if they've opened the time capsule yet. It would be neat to find out though. I thought the whole town of Gothemburg was very nice: well kept, historic, and picturesque. I tried to find the Swedish crosses but no luck.

Violet Sky- actually the saddle is in two parts: the saddle and then the removable mail bags that fit over any saddle and are passed from rider to rider.

There is a long History in USA, I was in Canada when you celebrated your Bi Centennial watching American TV.

I suppose everywhere you went , there is History.

Good job with your photos.

OH, I loved this Val!
That saddle...with the built in bags..not too much mail back then for a distance ride of that nature...will have t read up on how many riders and times they had.

I swore..I saw YOU yesterday at this fantastic 3 bridges place along the Oregon desert area...The train trestle over a canyon, looked to be holding up the 3 sisters mountains. I almost went up to the gal and said, "Val!"

Good subject. If everything works out, I'm planning on riding Apache in the Pony Express Ride in Lincoln County next year. How cool will THAT be?!
