Sunday Stills (6/5/11 Potluck)

This week's Sunday Stills challenge is Potluck. I decided to show some photos from my day trip last weekend. My younger son and I drove the 380 mile round trip to visit my mom for a few hours. This desolate road is the back way to Santa Fe from my house.

I call this formation the Devil's Backbone or Dinosaur Ridge. If you look REALLY close you can see the caboose just left off center at the base of the hills.

There are always bicycle riders on the back roads. This must have been a team working out because there were several people wearing the same shirt.
We made a side trip to the little village of Glorieta. The westernmost battle of the Civil War was fought at Glorieta Pass, which is often called the Gettysburg of the West. You can read more about it if you click on this link.

I took these photos of the local church and then, as we began driving away, my son told me to look!

Emus in front of churches! Okay...

Here's their cute little post office.

This signboard has obviously seen better days. It is written in marker, telling about the Battle of Glorieta on the road ahead. However, we couldn't find the actual battlegrounds.

When my youngest son was a little boy, he would always comment that it looked like we were going to Alaska when we'd drive through this area. Isn't it pretty?
I love this picture of an old run down barn with beautiful snow covered mountains in the background and a bright yellow fire hydrant in front. Crazy!

It's the little surprises in life, like cabooses in the middle of nowhere, emus in front of churchs, hand written historical signs, and out of place fire hydrants that make side trips so worthwhile for me. A road trip in New Mexico is definitely a pot luck of photo opportunities. I hope you enjoyed it.

Backroads are wonderful for seeing how the landscape changes, and what gets left behind! Love that last shot!

that looks like a fun place to visit. I like the railroad tracks. And am amazed at the desert on one side and the mountains on the other, how cool!

IMO, this is one of your best Sunday Stills posts, not just for your fun photos but for your clever commentary. So true about the little surprises in life. And New Mexico corners that market easily. lol!

Great shots, the Battle of Glorietta Pass was more of a skirmish and not that big of a site, but an interesting place. Love the humpback ridge shot..:-)
