With a bag clutched in her hand,

she gathered the pinon nuts.

My good friend Lisa, her son Jem, and I took a little hike down Gutierrez Canyon today and picked pine nuts along the way.

We picked about a pound each.

Yummy!!
Now if someone has an easy way to break open the shells and get to the nuts without using one's teeth, please let me know!

I saw this tree along the high canyon wall and wondered how it could still be alive at all.

Jeez! You're fast! lol! What a beautiful day for hike and such fun gathering pinons together, too.

I had no idea you took that funny photo of me foraging for pinons. I truly do look like a fuzzy headed monkey in that photo! lol :)

Eeee Eeee, Oooooh!, Oooooh!!!

no, you look cute!
I still want to know the secret for picking perfect pinon nuts. So many of mine turn out empty or shriveled. Coffee bean color- no white or gray or light brown, three dimensional, shiny, ??
Jeez! It's hard.

I was wondering who that fuzzy headed monkey was!

It has been a long time since I was in a place where you could gather pine nuts! Remember...remember.....wow, 1978. Long time. As I recall, if you roast 'em, the shells get more brittle. But it's been so long...........
